Just a thought generated by the Gospel for the 15th Sunday of Ordinary Time
The gospel passage for the weekend liturgies on July 11,'10 comes from Luke's Gospel and tells the story of the Samaritan, the victim and the innkeeper. (also known as the "story of the good Samaritan").It occurred to me that there might be an application of the story to the Catholic charismatic renewal.
Here's what popped into my mind when I heard the gospel read at Mass.
First, I asked myself who is Jesus among the three "characters" in the story? (Augustine says that Jesus is the Samaritan and the victim is fallen humanity.) I think, rather, that the Samaritan represents a most unlikely and even most-despised person. It is this person who brings the victim to Jesus, the inn-keeper The Samaritan gives the victim "first-aid" but it is the inn-keeper who takes care of the victim, for however long it takes to effect a cure.
Next, I thought of the early days of the Catholic charismatic renewal (when the CCR was called the "Catholic Pentecostal Movement").
As folklore has it, it wasn't the Catholic hierarchy or clergy who brought the news of the charismatic renewal to the Catholic "early adopters". If I recall correctly, it was the most despised of non-Catholics, the Pentecostals (whom we sometimes called "holy-rollers") who brought the news of the renewal to the Catholics. They may have even brought people to Jesus who is, after all, the one who baptizes in His Spirit.
I'd never thought of the beginnings of the renewal in this way before. But, I think I see the hand of the Lord in getting the likes of Flo Dodge, John Wimber, David duPlessis, among others, to bring the news of Jesus, the baptizer in the Spirit, to the people at the Duquesne weekend as well as the likes of Rev. Dennis Bennett, who brought many Catholics in the northwest U.S. to the baptizer.
Just a thought, as I said: what do you think? |
